Born and raised in Edinburgh, on leaving school became an Approved Electrician. From there decided to return to education and obtained a degree in Building Services Engineering at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. From their I worked at Blackwood Partnership Consulting Engineers in Edinburgh for 7 years where I met Albert Wodar. I then traveled to Australia where I worked with AECOM Consulting Engineers in Brisbane for 1 year. I returned to Edinburgh and continued my career at Wallace Whittle (TUV SUD) where I worked on more retail and residential sectors. Following a number of years of traveling down to London working on the 2012 Olympic Village and another major residential regeneration projects, Albert and I decided to start our own company and I left to start Horizon M&E and have never looked back.
Born in Poland, I moved to Scotland when I was aged four. I live and have grown up in Kirkcaldy. I moved to Edinburgh to study building services engineering at Heriot Watt university and begin my career in this subject. I moved back to Kirkcaldy to raise a family. My first role after university was with BDP Advanced technologies. This was a design and build contractor who specialised in the Pharmaceutical and Semi-Conductor sectors based in Livingston. I then went on to work in TPS Design in Edinburgh which mainly worked within the prison and court sectors. Following that, I worked in Blackwood Partnership in Edinburgh where I met John Robertson and mainly worked on retail and shopping centre design. Following that, I went to work at Wallace Whittle (TUV SUD) where I worked on more retail and residential sectors. Following a number of years of travelling down to London on a major residential project, we decided to start our own company and I left to start Horizon M&E and have never looked back.
With a background in mechanical engineering with over 20 years’ experience, Sarah began to specialise in sustainability and energy in the built environment over 15 years ago.
She leads on the definition of low energy and low carbon building and services design, and has been heavily involved in setting a pathway to net zero to our new and existing building stock, including historic and complex buildings.
Sarah is accredited to carry out energy assessments and building physics studies utilising dynamic simulation modelling and is a BREEAM Accredited Professional, ensuring a holistic multi-level approach to low energy building design, operation and management.
She is an advocate for women in engineering, STEM ambassador and Scottish Chair of the Association of Consulting Engineers.
Sarah is also a Board Member of the Scottish Building Contract Committee (SBCC).
Karen is a Director and Office Manager at Horizon M&E Services Design Limited. She is an ICAS Chartered Accountant with over 20 years’ experience. Originally from Grangemouth, I graduated from Stirling and Glasgow Caledonian University with a degree then specialist post grad Diploma in Healthcare which I used in ITU then health board and national level Patient Safety programmes. In my role as a Director at Horizon, I help with the day to day running of the practice. Outside of work my time is spent with our family or swimming with friends.
Stewart is a Senior Engineer at Horizon M&E. I joined Horizon after building up a wealth of experience in the buildng services industry. I’ve developed a very good technical knowledge along with practical experience in electrical design. I’m born and bread in Edinburgh and enjoy the vibrant lifestyle it offers.
Originally from Canada I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria, BC. Since then, I worked as a Design Engineer on various projects including controlled environment agriculture, labs, schools, and ice arena refrigeration plants. I moved to Edinburgh in 2021 where I have been working on an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering. I have an interest in horticulture, play both trumpet and guitar, and enjoy all sorts of puzzles and games.
I hail from Ireland but since university I have taken root through London, Bristol and Wales to land in the gorgeous Edinburgh. How could I ever leave. Coming from a background of aircraft mechanics I’m looking to take building services to the sky!”
After finishing school, I attended Heriot-Watt University and achieved my bachelor’s degree with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I then worked in construction engineering within the nuclear industry for a year where I developed a varied list of skills. Thereafter, moving into a more design-based graduate roll here at Horizon. I’m looking forward to designing and implementing innovative electrical systems across a range of industries. When I’m not at work, I’ll normally be found at the rugby club, on my mountain bike, or at Easter Road!
